Residential Lighting Design: Domestic Project, Leighton Buzzard

The project:

This three-bed detached house was to be completely refurbished by its owners to better suit their lifestyle and the entertaining requirement they had. The downstairs was extended and remodelled and the upstairs enlarged the master bedroom and added a large ensuite with wet room. Every room of the house was redecorated along with a revised front and rear external elevation. The clients were heavily involved with every aspect of the specification and all lighting choices were discussed in detail. Natural light played a key part and was used to greatest effect in the open planned rear of the property where skylights and full width
bi-fold doors gave the space its open and airy feel.

The brief:

We were engaged to provide a lighting design that would tie together all areas of the house, give a warm soft light and be flexible with the use of a full controls system. The lights were to be discreet in their appearance and dimmable to ensure that the right mood for entertaining and relaxed living would be achievable. Architectural features such as shadow gaps and skylights were to be highlighted to achieve a soft seamless finish to edges and to avoid dark voids after dark. Warm colour temperatures of 3000K were to be used to create a cosy feel and bring out the interior designers’ colour themes throughout the house.

The result:

The owners were thrilled with the result as the lighting brought the house alive after dark and enabled scenes to be set dependent on mood or function. The shadow gaps provided a floating feeling to walls and lifted the dark voids of the skylights. Setting of the Mode controls system meant that the Orluna and IGuzzini products could be addressed individually so that if desired, even just one light over the dining table could be switched on to highlight that feature alone for intimate dining. Large pendants placed in unusual places added a quirky twist to the layouts and allowed the eye to travel the space uninterrupted. The stunning kitchen from local company Kitchen Matters was lit with near invisible downlights that when either on, or off blended with the clean lines of the ceiling. Overall this originally modest home has been transformed into a state of the art
‘des res’ and is a credit to its owner’s tireless desire for perfection.
