Lorraine impressed me form the very first moment we worked together. I hired Lorraine for a specific role but it became clear that her skills far exceeded my expectations. Lorraine demonstrated that she was a fast learner and also possessed people skills that meant that she could slot into a future sales and management role with ease, which she accomplished. Bats were a major constraint at a recent housing project in Somerset and the preservation of well-used flight corridors linking multiple roosts was crucial for a successful planning outcome both for the client and for the bats. Despite being approached relatively late in the process, Lorraine pulled out the stops to help guide the developer and us ecologists through the potential minefield of lighting options across the site. The approved strategy which resulted achieved lighting levels no greater than at present across the site and avoids impacts on one of our rarest bat species. I look forward to working with Lorraine again on future tricky sites!

Lorraine and her company “it does Lighting Ltd” have been working closely with us since the beginning of 2012 and this has proved of great benefit. Lorraine has contributed to the new Secured by Design lighting guidance for streets and outdoor spaces and helped to shape that document for imminent release. To help our officers implement the changes Lorraine recently presented a series of workshops at our National Training Event on the technical detail of the new British Standard for street lighting (BS5489:2013) which included guidance on the basics of lighting. We will continue to work with Lorraine and seek her assistance on future lighting guidance documents and look forward to a long a fruitful working relationship.

Lorraine is well connected with the local authorities from her consultancy work on a number of high profile lighting design projects. “My team and I recently attended a one day training course by It Does Lighting, covering the basics of lighting design for town planners and other non-lighting professionals. I thought Lorraine’s delivery was excellent and the day was highly informative. I had very little understanding of lighting design prior to this. However, I now feel I have the skills to do an initial sense check on a lighting design/scheme, in that I would know what information to look for and how to tell if it has been properly considered. This will be useful at pre-app meetings and when reviewing initial plans, when I do not have access the a specialist lighting consultant. I would then be able to ask appropriate initial questions before paying a consultant to carry out a full review at the appropriate time. We also spent some time during the training thinking about the types of information that would need to be captured within a lighting condition. This was also really useful and will ensure that we can control lighting design appropriately, through each stage of the planning process.”
