BBC Cambridgeshire – Lighting Interview
I had the privilege of serving as a lighting expert for BBC Cambridgeshire, providing technical insights on recent changes to street lighting across the region. In my interview with Dotty McLeod, I discussed key aspects of the new lighting systems, offering both technical explanations and insights into the public’s response to these changes.
Drawing from my experience in overseeing large-scale asset transitions for local authorities, I was able to provide insights on why residents may perceive the new lighting differently. A change in optics or light sources on a street can alter how much illumination reaches footpaths or residential entrances. While some may feel their surroundings have become darker, the reality is that the lighting is now functioning as intended—focusing on public highways and footpaths while reducing unnecessary spill light. This not only improves visibility where it’s needed but also supports ecological well-being by preserving natural darkness for wildlife and human sleep cycles.
Change can be challenging, but with clear explanations, concerns often resolve themselves. The BBC team was highly appreciative of my contribution, and they have expressed interest in having me back for future features on lighting. I’m pleased that I was able to deliver the insights they were looking for.
