Lorraine is a creative lighting designer with over 19 years lighting industry experience.
Working in all areas of lighting design and consultancy, Lorraine's career as a lighting designer started when she first left school at 16 where she was positioned with Thorn Lighting as a YTS (youth training scheme) trainee lighting engineer. This role was to give her basic grounding in the art of lighting but due to management issues was short lived and she left to experience other areas of the job market including running her own company for 3 years making and designing stained glass windows.
She returned to Thorn 6 years later as a trainee lighting designer in the same department and resumed her career progression. Lorraine was able to progress quickly and found she had natural ability in design of all types of lighting. Her progression to Lighting Engineer from Trainee was the quickest in Thorns history and along with taking professional qualifications through the Lighting Industry Federation (LIF) and Thorn's own in-house training enabling her to experience all types and disciplines of the lighting world.
Lorraine’s knowledge covers all areas of lighitng including innovation, Lighting product design, energy management systems(CMS), floodlighting, stadium lighting, street, amenity, interior lighting, architectural, tunnel, commercial and domestic. She has had the pleasure of being the consultant and designer for the lighting of many high profile buildings in the UK and also assisted on the lighting of major projects in other countries.
The companies client base is International, varied and covers all aspects of the industry from Local Authorities/municipalities and main consultants to developers and commercial end users as well as domestic customers. Their main focus in recent years is on energy saving solutions and decorative but functional lighting although interior and street lighting also forms a large proportion of their work.
Lorraine has won several awards for her lighting work and since becoming an independant lighting consultant has been responsible for ground breaking projects for energy saving and product innovation which were the first of their kind in the UK.
Lorraine has been involved on many committees including the implementation of the LG3 categories for interior lighting, the ILE (Institute of Lighting Engineers) London and South East Committee and after gaining MSLL for the SLL branch of CIBSE is now hopeful of obtaining IEng and MILP through the ILP.
Lorraine’s work as an International lighting consultant also involves training clients in lighting design, PFI training for designers, development control designs for section 278 and 38 works for developers and research into areas such as CMS/remote monitioring systems for Central Government. Lorraine has been health and safety trained, completed her ECS card training. She is aware of electrical practices although does not design electrical layouts personally and has experience of DNO and private network issues through various roles over the years. Lorraine has developed products with three major manufacturers and been asked to give opinions on product development for various industry market research panels.
Client Training Opportunities
As part of the lighting and energy reduction consutlancy Lorraine runs various customer training courses on all aspects of lighting design, PFI design and industry regulations. She runs seminars and gives presentations on product innovation and advises on lamp/product technologies to both the industry and clients. Lighting design training on understanding BS5489:2003 and BSEN13201:2003 are also available.
Training on various lighting design packages are also offered and these include Visual, Calculux and Dialux.
