This project looked at the new refurbishment work for Gatwick South Terminal and its interior spaces and customer interfaces. The area was designed by Grimshaw architects and I was brought in as the specialist lighting consultant by their consultants Jacobs to assist with the lighting specification.
Lighting design for this space had to make the travellers feel welcome but also enable them to look around the space and find their way easily. The finishes were bright and minimalist and the lighting design reflected this. LED's were proposed to keep running costs and maintenance to a minimum.
The areas encompassed within the lighting desing for this project were the main terminal building, the travelator area and the customer interface from the car park to the conconcourse. The travelator gave the most scope to be inventive as this is where the public are channeled into one space and only going in one direction. This gave me the opportunity to suggest avatars, large scale vidi walls and interactive projection to make the journey more interesting and generate revenue from advertising.
The concourse area lighting was designed to unconsiously draw the traveller to the gates. It was linear in design and used Philips high powered LED's to great advantage.
This project is still on going and further finished photos will be posted on completion.
